Colic in babies
Eduardo Fedriani
As many of you already know, colic is very common in babies up to the third or fourth month of life. It is a very intense pain in the baby's gastrointestinal tract, causing constant crying, which worries parents a lot, especially if they are first-timers. It is good to see a pediatrician in these cases to make sure of the cause, but if it is infant colic, it is not a big deal; it will pass in three or four months.
Do you know how to identify it? If your baby suffers from gas, abdominal pain, irritability, and prolonged crying, it is probably colic. The cause of this pain is not 100% clear, but many experts associate it with the immaturity of the baby's digestive system. This makes perfect sense since after birth is when they really start to make an effort to eat and their stomach is just beginning to function. To prevent the baby from swallowing air, we need to be very attentive when breastfeeding or bottle-feeding; if we hold them in an upright position, it is less likely that air will enter. Also, we should give gentle back massages after each feeding to help release any air they may have swallowed. During these first months of life, we cannot do much to help, as we have to wait for their stomach to fully develop and for the pain to pass. Additionally, during the first months, the baby will be exclusively breastfed. But as soon as you start complementary feeding, at Smileat we can help you avoid constipation or gas with our organic fruit and vegetable purees for babies, whose fiber will help them have good digestion.
Always remember to take care of your little one’s health with organic and additive-free baby food; they will thank you for it in the future.
