The importance of hydrating and cooling your baby in summer
Eduardo Fedriani
We should always monitor the baby's temperature, but now with the arrival of summer and the heat, we need to be even more attentive. How do we do it? Our child will remind us. As every parent knows, pediatricians currently recommend breastfeeding or bottle-feeding on demand. During this time of year, our baby will “ask for it” even more. Feedings may be shorter but much more frequent. Babies who are exclusively breastfed do not need water, but those who take formula milk should be given a little, as long as they accept it. A newborn baby's body has a higher percentage of water than an adult's—exactly 75% of their body is water—so we need to keep them perfectly hydrated to ensure their body functions properly. How can we tell if the baby is thirsty? If they put their hand in their mouth a lot or stick out their tongue, it’s a sign they need hydration. Their urine will also give us clues; if it is very dark, they need to drink. If your baby is over 6 months old, remember that they should be hydrated not only with water or milk but also with fruit. Within our entire range of baby food products, we recommend doing this with our organic fruit purees.
Remember that we should not only monitor the little one’s drinks and food but also the environment where they are. They should not spend too much time in the sun or in excessively hot places. The ideal is a cool environment, and if it must be with air conditioning or a fan, it should not blow directly on the baby. Let’s not forget sun protection cream and keeping their head wet and cool.
