8 Keys to Properly Preserve Baby Food
When we become parents, time management becomes much more complicated. It feels like the day has far fewer hours, and you always have pending tasks, no matter how much you try to organize yourself.
One of the keys to optimizing time when you have babies is to prepare large quantities of baby food (purees) and store them for later use. For example, freezing purees in individual portions. This is also a good option if you are going on vacation for a few days, so you already have your little one’s meals prepared.
Food Storage Tips
But do we know how to store these foods so they don’t lose their properties?
Ideally, store them in the refrigerator or freezer, but it’s recommended to follow these tips:
- If you keep it in the fridge, place the puree in the coldest part of the refrigerator. Do not store it for more than 48 hours.
- Put the food (purees) in airtight containers, which help better preserve their properties.
- If you are going to freeze the food, it’s best to do so within a few hours of cooking to avoid losing the food’s properties.
- Do not freeze food while it is still hot. Wait for it to cool down.
- Always try to thaw food in the refrigerator and not in the microwave. Or, if necessary, use a double boiler.
- Store individual portions and label the freezing date. Consume from the oldest to the newest.
- Do not refreeze puree once it has been thawed.
- It’s better not to freeze fruit purees because their properties are not preserved as well as those of vegetables. Fruit oxidizes if not consumed immediately after being thawed.
